Hybrid laser metal deposition of a Fe–Cr–Mo–V–Mn tool steel for hot stamping applications

Abstract In this investigation, a novel Fe–Cr–Mo–V–Mn hot work tool steel powder was specifically developed for laser-based additive manufacturing, targeting the possibility to create conformal cooling channels in stamping tools improved efficiency during forming of sheets automotive industry. Specimens proposed were printed via laser metal deposition and characterized demonstrate its compatibility with steels that are commonly used tooling The applicability material proved by fabricating simple geometry demonstrator using hybrid process combining milling deposition. Finally, hybrid-manufactured segment tested pilot plant evaluate effect investigated on performance when compared conventional machined from H13 steel. results showed features thermophysical properties similar most popular it can be efficiently produce containing deposition, without need intermediate structures improve between substrate deposited volumes.
